Thankful to be on the GROUND!

So yesterday I (J) returned from my trip to Dallas for a weekend of prayer and Bible study. Much needed! On the day I traveled there (last Thursday), the plane landed in NYCity in the water after losing its engines to flocks of birds. We spent some time watching the reporting on FOX News as we readied ourselves each morning. I recall one man saying, "I will never again sleep through the emergency talk!"

I went to the airport Sunday morning beautifully calmed after my time spent with Jesus. I had a wonderful talk with a woman over coffee while we waited to board. At one point, she disappeared and reappeared with a new ticket for me - she had upgraded my ticket to first class! She travels a lot for business and we were having a nice conversation about adoption.

I must admit - first class is NICE. :-) A moist and warm towel to wash your hands before eating. Linen napkins. Wine glasses of juice. And hot Pillsbury biscuits. I'm not kidding. Did I mention that coach class didn't even get pretzels?!

I found myself sitting next to one of the CEO's for Brooks Brothers and trying to hide my unmanicured fingernails. She shared very helpful advice for being a working mother like her. She always had her housekeeper watch her daughter while she composed herself for a half an hour alone after work each day. Somehow, I just don't think I can get R to go for a housekeeper just quite yet.

Near the end of our flight, I put on my ipod to worship. Somewhere in the middle of a song, I hear the rumblings of an announcement and see panicked faces all about me. "Dear God!" Mrs. Brooks Brothers says. I decide perhaps we're being delayed so I reluctantly pull off the earpieces to tune in. Before I can decipher the message, a flight attendant is whipping through the cabin saying in a panicked voice, "This is real emergency, people! Tray tables up NOW! The engine has failed and we need to land this plane immediately."

I soak in the information. He's serious. The nose of the plane is down. We're angled. I realize if they told us what to do in an emergency at the beginning of the trip, I wasn't listening. How does my seat turn into an Inspector Gadget parachute?

The pilot tells us that we hope to land in 10 minutes. I think of my Lord, first. I realize what I've always hoped. I'm not afraid of death. At all. I am, however, afraid of the DYING. Not really looking forward to the crashing, or drowning, or cancer or whatever may proceed my meeting Jesus. The thought of dying in a plane just wasn't feeling good to me.

Then I think about my kids. Dear God, we just got Mia! She needs her mom! My boys need their mom. And then I'm reassured that they will all be just fine with my husband.

Then I think, I'm finally in first class and I won't live to tell anyone about it! lol! I believe God is trying to boost my spirits. I decide that if I can't share my good fortune with my family, can't share all the things they will never experience in coach, I can least be fortunate that I died living the good life. :-)

In the end, I lived. Perhaps you've realized that. We were then BUSSED from JFK in NYCity to Hartford and while absolutely exhausted from the ordeal, I had the opportunity to tuck my kids in bed once again and count my blessings.

thank you, Lord!
