Normal Life

With the conclusion of New Year's Day, we're ready for the return of normal life. Do you ever feel that way? We LOVE the holidays, all the lights and gifts and carols and FOOD. We especially love the way that people join together to worship Jesus and celebrate the beautiful things in life, like faith and family and friends.

But after a week of cooking, cleaning, and traveling, it's nice to go back to normal life, too. There's something so sad about taking the tree down, but there's an oddly restful feeling that comes when some of the holiday clutter is tucked away and the home is cleaned and prepared for reentry into the world.

In our neck of the woods, God has blanketed the yard with a fresh, soft snow. Just a few inches to glitter and gleam. It makes me want to clean out the cupboards and bake warm bread.

And so real life returns...Welcome, 2010!

We love this woman!

There are some people you meet in life with whom you instantly fall in love. Irmgard is one of them. I first met R's grandmother almost 15 years ago when the man I would marry took me home to meet his family. From the East Coast originally, she was quick to laugh and her accented voice shared stories of how life used to be.

Life hasn't been easy for Irmgard and certainly not what she planned. She spent several decades caring for her husband after his stroke. Yet, she chose to handle the disappointments and challenges with a positive attitude and a big smile.

Today, Irmgard is 84 and as lively as ever. She's at our home visiting for the holidays and enjoying every minute of our chaos. She's playing Go Fish and reading books and even trying her hand at the Wii. Our children adore her. Everyone does.

We're so thankful for each minute we have to spend with her. We love you, Oma!
