Sigh

All good things must end.

We had a WONDERFUL day at the beach yesterday, but today was less than beautiful here. Let's just say we had cranky kids. To be fair, one wasn't cranky, but when 3 out of 4 are...it just pretty much doesn't matter anymore.

Arguing. Bickering. And a disaster of a house. With company coming in 48 hours.

The boys have left their things EVERYWHERE. I don't usually post about this part of life with four kids, but I'll admit it...our kids aren't neat. I refuse to say they're slobs because I fear that will cement their already pathetic tendencies towards slovenliness. But, at this point, I pray for their wives.

After months of working endlessly to get them to pick up their things, we had had enough. Today, many, many things found their way into a rubbermaid to be taken out in time AFTER they have learned how to take care of their basic essentials. Like toothbrushes. Why is it hard to remember to put them INTO the holder?! But I digress...

So, the boys were packing up everything that is a "want" item and our youngest son says,

"Mom, is a brother a want or a need? Because I was thinking we should put J in the box, too."

Sigh. This may take longer than I thought.

Wingaersheek Beach

It's the First Official Day of Summer Vacation here! We celebrated with the cousins in Boston at a fun beach filled with all sorts of crabs....the kids loved it and so did the parents!

Where there are SIX boys gathered, there will be mischief. At least, that's what we tell ourselves so that we feel better about our parenting skills. After catching and building crab forts in the sand, they decided to place the crabs together and watch them duke it out. Much to the boys' chagrin, the smart crustaceans tunneled for safety instead. :-)

After the gorgeous day on the coast, we headed for R's brother and sister-in-law's home for a true New England dinner. Lobsters! Well, and pizza for those of us who wouldn't touch them. :-)

We're beached and we're fed. Bring on the summer!

Quickly...

We're packing up to enjoy a day at the beach tomorrow, but had to quickly share...

SCHOOL'S OUT!

We can finally enjoy the long days like all of our southern friends whose kids have been out forever already!

G and J came home from school with a sealed envelope telling them who their teacher next year would be. Ooooooh, the suspense!

Survey says?

G gets Mrs. Archibald - experienced, no-nonsense, can reduce you to shaking with just one look, Mrs. Archibald. She's so tough, I wrote a song to motivate our son when J had her a few years ago. It was all about - you guessed it - going above and beyond the call of duty. Doing MORE than Mrs. A. required. And that, my friends, is quite a feat to accomplish. We sang that song EVERY morning as I dropped him off at school and I can still see his eyes rolling as he walked to the building. Gotta' love being a parent.

BUT, lest I paint Mrs. A as just a tough cookie, she also leads the kids in singing patriotic songs every morning, hosts a big tea party, and has the kids to her home for a pool party at the end of the year. A fair trade, I'd say.

J, on the other hand, is entering into unchartered waters with a teacher we've not had before. Rest assured I'll get the skinny at the town pool this summer, but until then what I DO know is that Joseph is NOT pleased. His best friend was assigned to a different class. BOTH boys were so sad. J actually went to his room to be alone after hearing the news. 'Bout broke this mother's heart.

M spent the entire time they talked about next year begging to go to kindergarten.

Quite the chaotic scene. And N? He was just happy to play the Wii and have no homework. :-)

Pictures from the beach tomorrow coming soon!

Happy Father's Day!

There are lots of tributes flying around today...and fittingly so. In this house, R has been crowned "King for the Day," with a royal crown and cape. His wish is our command, although there was a request from one little that no royal issues be decreed that involve cleaning! Apparently, the love fest only goes so far. ;-)

We've made his favorite chocolate mint cheesecake and will grill out later today.

R blesses our lives so abundantly! We appreciate that

He works hard to provide for us

He takes time to play

He reads great stories

He takes the boys camping

He does dishes and cleans bathrooms

He makes us laugh...a lot.

Happy Father's Day!
