I don't know when it happened, but M has suddenly learned to identify others who are Chinese. And she is tickled pink when she does. I'm not sure everyone else is...like when we went to the circus recently and instead of noticing the show, she pointed to the girls behind us and loudly proclaimed, "Look, Mama! Chinese! Me Chinese, too! Same!"
The next question that invariably follows is, "That girl have mama? Still waiting?"
I'm not sure how much she truly understands, but we talk about her adoption story a lot. She likes to tell how her Baba and Mama flew all the way across the world to find her in China and bring her home. Because she needed us. And we needed her.
She has made it her mission to find moms for all the girls. Yesterday she said to me, "Mama! Aunt R go! Go to China! Be Mama to baby! No more sad! Give hugs!" Aunt R...you're in trouble now!
Today, she came to my room bearing one of her most valued possessions...a little coin. She only has maybe 3. She gave it to me and said, "For babies in China. Give Ms. G. to go China bring baby girl home."
Yeah, I lost it.
How come these precious children see so easily what so many of adults find excuses not to see? I'm absolutely in awe...
