Spasms Strike Again
Today, Gabe was tentatively diagnosed with vasal spasms by a pediatric cardiologist. We've been suspecting for a little while now that this was what was going on given our family history of heart/vascular issues. Still, it's strange. I guess I expected it to take longer to reach a diagnosis...more tests, procedures, something...His description of the pains were spot on and really don't fit any other things. His primary symptoms are terrible pain in his legs and ankles, although he has had a couple instances of chest pain. His symptoms seems to most clearly match my sister's and they both find relief with the same things.
He's starting on a low dose of cardiac med (incidently, the same that several of us in the family take). We need to note any changes on the meds as one way to confirm the diagnosis. If it confirms vasal spasms, then we will look at long term effects of different meds and make a treatment plan. Another option to confirm the condition is to have an angiogram. However, it can be tricky to "catch" an episode while having the angiogram. It worked for me; the veins near my heart went instantly into spasm during the procedure. However, for some people, their body doesn't have an episode from the irritant used and so an invasive procedure is done for nothing.
The doctor is consulting with peers to see if they are in agreement about her suggested protocol. In the meantime, please pray for Gabriel. Pray that he has no bad side effects and that this helps. Please also pray that his feelings about this stay calm. He can struggle with worry and he has seen people in our family struggle with their health due to these spasms...so he's a bit nervous about that happening to him in time.

Sadly, he gave up soccer this month partly because his legs were hurting a lot from it. The spasms have reduced since then...which is good, but sad because he's an awesome soccer player!
