Boys

Here's my son after an hour and a half outside with his brother and friends.

On Marriage...from our Middle Son

Yesterday, J gave me a big hug and said what is, quite possibly, my favorite thing ever.

"Mom, if dad hadn't taken you, I would've tooken you."

Back by Popular Demand...

You Know You Have Boys When...

You hear, "Doesn't this scab look just like roast beef?"

You find yourself asking, "Son, are you pants on backwards?"

You find you're not surprised when you hear back, "Huh? Oh. Yeah. They're fine."

Your child prays, "Please make me sick so I can stay home from school tomorrow."

Your yard has a scary combination of rope, wood, buckets, and bikes displayed.

The pediatrician drives REALLY slowly past your home. Probably to make sure all of the children in the tree are not with said rope. Again.

You swear you made cookies yet the jar is empty. Again.

But you LOVE raising boys because...

Their whole world is better with a really good snack.

They lavish hugs and kisses on their mama.

They keep asking when Mother's Day is. :-)

A DOG?!?!?

Dear Reader, please do not get too excited. I'm sure that title excites you. It seems everyone likes dogs. I mean nothing personal by this, but--I don't. (This is the dad writing). Now, I'm sure you are perfectly wonderful. And I'm sure your dog is the best dog there is. Some of my favorite people like dogs. But I don't. I still like you. I will still be civil to your dog. I don't expect you to hide the dog if I happen to come over. I might even pet it. But, to be completely above board here, I just don't like dogs.

OK. I've met two dogs that I'd put in the "like" category. (Yes, and that means that YOUR dog probably isn't on this list. Please don't be offended. I'm sure it's my fault entirely.) My in-laws' Collie was a good dog who meant well, even if he did very dog-like things like nip my heels while I played with my kids in his yard. (My wife insists he was protecting the kids from me. ?????) He was a good dog and is surely missed.

And then there's Lady Josephine. The only dog I've ever owned. The only dog I've ever actually loved. After Lady J., I can understand why people can become very attached to dogs. But those two years were not enough to change this hardened dog disliker. In fact, I believe they made it worse. Now I know that you can simultaneously be extremely frustrated by a dog (dare I say "annoyed") and all it's dog-like qualities AND have your heart ripped out of your chest when the bond between you and dog is severed. THAT is just nuts. Why would I even consider going through that again?!

Why?

Because I have a family whom I love. That is the only reason Lady Josephine was invited into our lives. And it is the only reason a dog would ever enter my personal life again. My son WANTS a dog. Well, I'd say that TWO sons and my daughter WANT a dog. Our eldest is fairly indifferent, but I'd bet that he'd like a dog if there was a dog around.

And then there's my wife. She grew up with dogs. But she'd led me to believe that she would be a firm ally in my anti-dog stance. She has been before. But of course experienced a softening that led to Lady J. After Lady J. I thought she was firmly in the "no dog ever again" camp. How wrong I was!

She's joining the rebellion. No. Leading(!) the conspiracy. There has been a noticeable uptick in the pro-dog propaganda of late. Last night, I was greeted with a full page (ad) list of "things I would do to care for our dog" by our middle son. It was propped up on his window sill. ONE item was NOTICEABLY missing from his list. I'll give you one guess which item. Yeah. The smelly one.

I'll give you one more guess who'll end up doing the bulk of that, shall we say "doo-ty." Yeah. Right again!

Yours truly.

Sadly, I already know where you stand, dear reader. I'm quite confident you're already rooting for my poor, dog-deprived children.

Well....are you willing to back that up with free dog sitting?

To Be Continued.....(but I'm sure not hopeful.)

Do I hear $100?

Friends,

Remember WAY back when I mentioned that we have some amazing friends beginning the adoption process? After much prayer and discussion, both couples have decided to welcome home girls with medical needs from China! We couldn't be more excited!!

Well...now is when I'm hoping you'll help! Not everyone can go to China and bring home a child. Not everyone can rock that child in the middle of the night, kiss the ouwies, and help that child to heal physically and emotionally.

But everyone CAN help those who CAN adopt.

This November, our church is hosting a very special evening auction. We'll be raising funds to help these two (and other) beautiful families raise the money they need to bring these girls home.

The cost of an international adoption from China is roughly $25,000. Not exactly pocket change.

How can you help? (I'm so glad you asked!)

1. Donate something for us to auction off. Do you have a rental home that someone could bid to stay in? Do you have tickets to a great game? Can you babysit?

2. Can you be a matching financial donor for the event? Can you give up to $50, $100, $1,000 or more to match what others give?

To donate, post a comment and let me know how I can best contact you for details.

If you've been moved by watching us welcome home our little M, please help us help others do the same. We've all been blessed to be a blessing.
